Job Description


Ricardo Innovations (RI) is a division of Ricardo plc and is charged with converting the company’s research discoveries into commercial successes. By its nature the environment is creative, entrepreneurial, fast moving, unpredictable.  Each initiative will have the characteristics of a business start-up, with development taking place in a self-contained research culture, but within the structure and framework that is part of being in a PLC.  By its nature the approaches to business will often be unconventional.

Global Technologists within RI, supported by their teams, are at the forefront of this activity.  This role is part of that team supporting one of the Global Technologists in a variety of engineering and commercial activities.

Key Responsibilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:


  • Generating creative solutions both independently and as part of a team
  • Theoretical review of multi-domain concepts including technical analysis, modelling and simulation
  • First principles analysis (including physics, chemistry)
  • Developing, building, and analysing desktop demonstrators(hardware and software)
  • Developing and scrutinising design concepts
  • Developing novel engineering techniques
  • Reviewing patents
  • Interfacing with academic/research staff at universities including the management of PhDs
  • Interfacing with external partners on research projects
  • Précising various technical documents from a wide range of fields
  • Make technical arguments
  • Technical report writing


  • Developing value arguments
  • Engaging with clients to progress early initiatives
  • Executing contract reviews for unusual commercial models
  • Support RI sales – including dialogue, testing and preparation of material e.g. video material appropriate to TRL/ evidence required


The ideal candidate will:

  • Be capable of abstract thinking and translating these ideas into practical implementations
  • Have a broad technical knowledge e.g. physics and chemistry analysis, good mathematician, control theory, structural analysis, electronics, general programming including Simulink modelling of systems
  • Have clarity of thought
  • Well-developed technical communication and presentation skills (written, verbal, confident)
  • Be enthusiastic to learn and develop new ideas and technologies
  • Enjoy a challenge and not be daunted by hard problems
  • Be a self-starter, able to work independently, able to plan and prioritise
  • Be able to work with little or no supervision
  • Be committed to delivering on time, to promise
  • Be flexible about working hours and location
  • Be able to engage with people at all levels in an organisation
  • Have relevant industrial experience and commercial awareness
