Job Description

An opportunity exists for an Electric Machines Engineer to deliver Electric Machine Concept Designs for on-going client projects working on a large variety of applications ranging from vehicle, industrial and marine projects  from one off concepts through to complete multi-platform and multi-application production programmes. In addition to the core role of electrical machine design, the role requires a desire to use broader engineering skills across the department supporting projects at a systems level or in areas such as mechanical, thermal or electronic design.

Key Responsibilities:

To provide technical guidance and leadership for teams of engineers to deliver client projects in the following ways:

Delivery of electric machine concepts across a range of disciplines and projects
Design of concepts from first principles and analytical techniques
Ownership of the electric machine delivery, guiding design and analysis teams in electromagnetics, mechanical and thermal disciplines to achieve product requirements
Responsibility for the electric machine development processes
Working with the team on power electronics and control software
Authoring validation plans for electric machines including support of virtual and physical tests where applicable
Support of the sales teams in the development of market opportunities through client interaction, proposal support and roadmap development
Promotion of capability throughout Ricardo’s global customer base
Application of requirements and test cases at a sub-system and component level
Liaison with Programme Management Office (PMO), purchasing and finance to meet project requirements
Customer interfacing for technical aspects of a project

Required Qualifications and Experience:

The successful applicant will have an engineering background in electric machines and a number of years of experience of successfully delivering projects in a customer facing, automotive or equivalent industry.

Essential

Minimum degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline (e.g. electrical and electronic engineering/ mechanical engineering / physics / computer science / software engineering / maths / control engineering)
Expert user of analytical tools for concept selection, particularly MotorCAD
Excellent interpersonal and customer facing skills including high standard of written English.
Good grounding in eMachine systems
Understanding of 3D finite element / multi-physics analysis for eMachine design
Understanding of thermal systems and impact on realisation of designs
An active interest in new technology and developments in electric drive systems (machines, power electronics and control systems) and developing further PEMD skills in advanced control and power electronics.
Experience in development of electric machine systems understanding the systems level issues associated with integration of power electronics and machines
Experience in requirements capture and system level design approach
Willingness to diversify and be able to work in areas outside of core competencies

Desirable

Postgraduate qualification (MSc, PhD or equivalent)
Experience with Electromagnetic FEA software (e.g. SPEED, MotorSolve, MotorCAD EM and OPERA, JMAG & ANSYS)
Experience in productionisation of designs would be beneficial
Experience in reviewing 2D manufacturing drawings
Development and use of process driven development of electrical machines
Thermal design experience
Desire to work in a consultancy environment with a breadth of projects utilising skills but away from core areas of expertise
Ability to lead small engineering delivery teams
Willing to travel to worldwide customer sites as required
Power electronics understanding
Experienced in DFMEA for Electrical Systems
Hands on experience of working live with HV systems (>60V)
